The first dance at a wedding
For many couples, the first dance is one of the highlights of the whole wedding - but getting there takes real preparation, and often more time than you’d expect. It all starts with picking the song you want to dance to. There’s an enormous amount of music to choose from, so it’s no wonder that narrowing it down to one first dance song can feel overwhelming. Plenty of songs from years past have become genuine first dance classics, and new favorites keep joining the list every year, just as perfectly suited to your big moment. Once you’ve picked the song, it’s time to work on the choreography and actually learn to dance it. Some couples figure it out on their own, but most choose to learn with an instructor. To make the song search a little easier, we’ve put together a list you’ll find further down this article.

Which song should we choose?
Here’s the honest truth: what matters most is that you and your partner both genuinely like the song. It could be one that carries a special memory for you, or simply one you both love listening to. Either way, that’s what will make dancing it feel like a joy rather than a regret. Remember that your wedding is meant to be enjoyable, and that should guide your choice of song more than anything else. There’s no universal rule that says classic beats modern or the other way around - everyone’s musical taste is different, so pick whatever feels true to you both.

When should you start learning the first dance?
You’ll want to start well ahead of time, so you have room to get comfortable with the choreography, the song, and the steps. How long that takes depends a lot on whether the two of you already feel at ease dancing together, or whether you’re starting from the basics, like finding your sense of rhythm. It also depends on which song you’ve chosen. As a general guideline, aim to start no later than two to three months before the wedding. If you suspect this might be tougher for you than most, feel free to start as early as six months out - just know you’ll likely need to revisit the routine regularly so it stays fresh in your memory by the wedding.

What type of dance should you choose?
The type of dance you choose is closely tied to the song itself - each style comes with its own tempo, choreography, and mood. The most popular options are the Viennese waltz, rumba, tango, and simple social dancing. Before you decide, watch a few different styles and see which one you’re drawn to. It’s worth doing this before you start hunting for a song, since it’ll help you narrow down the list considerably.

How long should the first dance last?
The first dance typically lasts around two to three minutes, which comes down mostly to the length of your chosen song - and you can always shorten it if you’d like. Keep in mind, though: the longer you dance, the longer the choreography, and the more steps you’ll need to remember. If the first dance has you feeling nervous, trimming the song down is a simple way to make learning it much easier.

What shoes should you wear?
Above all, whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable. The first dance is stressful enough on its own without an unreliable pair of shoes making it worse. If heels aren’t your thing, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with switching into a different pair right before you dance - just make sure your dress is hemmed to the right length so it doesn’t catch on the floor. It’s also worth testing your dancing shoes during rehearsals beforehand, ideally the last few, so you walk in feeling sure of yourself. Whatever shoes you dance in should be well broken in and tested through an actual run of the choreography before the big day - and the same goes for the groom, who should bring his shoes to at least one rehearsal and break them in ahead of time too.

Can you skip the first dance?
We’re increasingly asked whether couples can skip the first dance altogether. Our take? Absolutely, you can let it go. Your wedding is supposed to be enjoyable, and if something doesn’t feel right for you, there’s no need to force it. The first dance often brings a fair amount of stress along with it, whether that’s during dance lessons or in the lead-up to the wedding, when you’re wondering if you’ll remember every step. Many couples say that once the first dance is behind them, so is most of the stress tied to the whole day - getting to the venue, walking down the aisle, all of it. If you don’t feel like doing a first dance, you can swap it for a lively entrance to the reception, or simply skip it entirely.

What can you do instead?
If you’ve decided a first dance isn’t for you, you can replace it with something else just as memorable. Weddings without a first dance are an increasingly common trend. One popular option is a lively, upbeat entrance to the reception set to your favorite music - a fun way to get everyone in the mood to celebrate together right from the start. You could also opt for a short speech to welcome your guests. And if you’re after something a little wilder, a group polonaise with your loved ones (prom-night style) is always an option!
